“City Supremacy” – Inter Milan Win Six Derbies In A Row Vs AC Milan For First Time In History | OneFootball

Inter Milan have beaten city rivals AC Milan in six consecutive derby matches for the first time in their history.

This “city supremacy” is highlighted in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

Going into yesterday’s match between Inter and Milan, it was certainly clear that the Nerazzurri had had the better of the fixture in recent months.

In the calendar year of 2023, Inter and Milan faced off five times.

Inter won on all five occasions.

First, there was a 3-0 shellacking of the Rossoneri in the Supercoppa Italiana. Then, just weeks after, there was a 1-0 victory, in which the scoreline hardly reflected Inter’s dominance.

In May of last year, Inter and Milan faced off in the Champions League semifinals.

Inter won the first leg 2-0. Then, the Nerazzurri sealed off the tie with a 1-0 win in the second match, for a 3-0 scoreline on aggregate.

Lastly, in last September’s league derby, Inter prevailed by an emphatic 5-1 scoreline.

“City Supremacy” For Inter With Six Straight Wins Vs AC Milan

Going into yesterday evening’s derby, Milan knew that they had to at least prevent Inter from winning if they wanted to avoid the embarrassment of their city rivals celebrating the Serie A title under their noses.

And even with having lost the five previous derbies, the Rossoneri had reason to hope.

Milan are still a strong team who have been in good form.

The Rossoneri had beaten Inter in the fall of 2022, coming back from the Nerazzurri scoring early to win a 3-2 thriller.

That match was more like “normal service” for the derby – a wild, unpredictable encounter where the form book and league table mattered little.

In the end, that’s perhaps what yesterday’s match resembled more closely.

It was a fiery match, particularly at the end as three players in total got sent off. One for Inter, and two for Milan.

The Rossoneri pushed hard for an equalizer after Fiyako Tomori had gotten one back.

There were some good chances for Milan, and excellent saves from Inter keeper Yann Sommer.

But the Nerazzurri had already gotten the job done. They looked the better side for the first hour or so.

Goals from Francesco Acerbi and Marcus Thuram sealed win number six for Inter in a remarkable sequence.

This is something without precedent in the Nerazzurri’s history. Just as neither they nor their city rivals have ever clinched a league title in the derby.
