Manchester City had to survive a late scare against Wolves to edge out a spirited second half fightback and pick up their first win of the season.

The visitors were dominant in the first half, going ahead through a clinical Kevin De Bruyne penalty and adding it to when Phil Foden finished off a superb team move.

But it was the home side who took control after the interval and missed several golden chances before Raúl Jiménez’s late header set up a grandstand finish.

There did indeed prove to be a late goal but it went City’s way when De Bruyne won the ball back on the edge of Wolves’ area and played in Gabriel Jesus to fire in via a huge deflection.

Aston Villa 1-0 Sheffield United

Scorers: Konsa 63′

Aston Villa started their season with all three points by punishing Sheffield United’s mistakes ruthlessly.

The Blades had captain John Egan sent off after just 12 minutes for pulling back Ollie Watkins as he ran in on goal and their evening worsened shortly before half-time.

John Lundstram’s penalty was saved by the debuting Emiliano Martínez, teeing up Villa to win it in the second half when Ezri Konsa headed home from a Tyrone Mings, just hours after penning a new deal, assist.
