City fund defibrillators for grassroots football clubs in East Manchester | OneFootball

Manchester City and the Club’s charity, City in the Community, have jointly funded the purchase of automated external defibrillators (AED) for grassroots football clubs in East Manchester.

An automated external defibrillator is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses life-threatening cardiac arrests and is able to treat them through defibrillation - a dose of electric current to the heart.

A total of 26 AEDs will be donated to clubs neighbouring the Etihad Stadium who are currently unable to access the devices at their training sessions and on matchdays.

The areas include: Ancoats & Beswick, Ardwick, Clayton & Openshaw, Gorton & Abbey Hey and Longsight.

Manchester Football Association - the organisation that oversees and supports grassroots football across Greater Manchester - will facilitate the distribution of the devices and provide training for each club that receives one in East Manchester.

Commenting on the joint initiative from Manchester City and City in the Community, Head of CITC, Mike Geary, said: “We are passionate about helping the people of Manchester enjoy football in a safe environment and are acutely aware of the importance of access to defibrillators.

“We hope that they are never needed but, if an emergency does happen, are pleased to know that more grassroots clubs in East Manchester will now have the means to respond.

“CITC and the Club have a longstanding relationship with Manchester FA and we would like to thank them for facilitating the delivery of the devices and providing the training sessions.”

Colin Bridgford, CEO & Senior Safeguarding Lead at Manchester FA, added: “Helping to keep football a safe place for all is our priority and we are extremely pleased to be working with Manchester City and City in the Community on this initiative.

“In addition to distributing the defibrillators, Manchester FA will also provide training to each grassroots football club that receives a device to ensure they are equipped to use it, if it is ever needed.”

Earlier this week, former Manchester City defender, Joleon Lescott, presented one of the AED’s to local team Collyhurst Youth Junior Football Club.

Anthony Barcoe, Collyhurst Youth Junior Football Club Chairman, added: “We are really pleased to accept this generous offer of a defibrillator from our close neighbours Manchester City.

“As a relatively new local community club it’s important for us to ensure that players, parents, team of volunteers and opponents can enjoy their football in a safe environment.

“This vital piece of equipment can save lives and so we are really proud and thankful to receive this generous gift.”
