Lazio striker Ciro Immobile claims he was approached by Newcastle United’s prospective Saudi owners over a move to St James’ Park this summer.
Immobile finished the 2019/20 Serie A season as top scorer, with his 36 goals also landing him the European Golden Shoe ahead of Robert Lewandowski and Cristiano Ronaldo.
However, the takeover fell through due to uncertainties from the Premier League, regarding the eligibility of those involved in the purchase.
“During the period in which there was talk of the possible purchase of Newcastle, they called my agent,” he told Corriere Dello Sport.
‘But then the Premier League did not approve that proposal, or the fund withdrew, I don’t remember well.
“I know they were also looking for an Italian coach, [Massimiliano] Allegri or [Luciano] Spalletti.”
Immobile has since pledged his future to Lazio who qualified for the Europa League next season.
