Despite his performance in the season and first leg of the relegation playoff, Christos Tzolis was unable to help Fortuna Düsseldorf reach the Bundesliga and is now likely to leave the club reports Sky Germany.
Tzolis was on loan at Düsseldorf from Norwich City and had a buy option worth €5m in the loan agreement if Düsseldorf were promoted. However, although the fee has now been reduced, as confirmed by Klaus Allofs: “The only thing that is perhaps positive today is that the clause is significantly lower than in the event of promotion.” the Greek international is unlikely to stay at the club.
However, Tzolis still sees his future in Germany, just this time in the Bundesliga. It was previously reported by Sport Bild that Union Berlin and Werder Bremen have both shown interest in Tzolis.
In his sole season in the 2.Bundesliga, Tzolis won the Torjägerkanone after finishing as joint top scorer in the league with 22 goals alongside Robert Glatzel from Hamburg and Haris Tabakovic of Hertha Berlin.
The 22-year-old also played a key role in Düsseldorf beating Bochum 3-0 at the Ruhrstadion in the first leg of the relegation playoff, but despite his best efforts in the second leg, Düsseldorf lost their three-goal lead before losing 6-5 on penalties.
