Christopher Vivell removal the latest symptom of Chelsea’s worrying behind the scenes dysfunction

The departure of Christopher Vivell from Chelsea is the latest embarrassing moment for the Clearlake ownership.
It was announced last night that the club had put their technical director on gardening leave, just 7 months after they appointed him following a long chase.
When Vivell was appointed, and was joined by Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart (let alone Joe Shield and Kyle Macauley, all of whom have joined in the last 12 months), there was very much a sense of “too many cooks” – but we assumed that was obvious to everyone including those making the decisions. Clearly they hadn’t thought about it, hence Vivell now getting the boot because he’s basically redundant in this new structure.
The idea of a “technical director” was that he was going to oversee Chelsea’s multi club model. In fact, just a couple of weeks after we agreed to kick that model off with the purchase of Strasbourg, Vivell has gone.
We’d love to know a little more about the chaos behind the scenes – we’re only seeing the results of it, not the madness in action.
In any case, hopefully this new simplified structure will help things move along this summer. We’ve seen some successful outgoings, but have yet to land any of our big name targets, and we’re already just a week away from August. There is a lot to do, and time is running out to do it.
