German magazine Kicker has announced the winners of the men’s and women’s Footballer of the Year award for 2022, with Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku and Bayern Munich’s Lea Schüller claiming the respective awards.
Nkunu joined Leipzig from PSG in his native France in 2019, but enjoyed a superb campaign last time round with 35 goals scored in 52 total appearances for the club.
Meanwhile, Schüller fired in 16 goals to finish top scorer in the Frauen-Bundesliga, but unfortunately missed the action in Euro 2022 due to a positive Covid test at the start of the tournament.
Alexandra Popp, who is due to play in tonight’s final with England, came second in the voting.
Robert Lewandowski – now at Barcelona – finished a close second in the men’s category, with 128 votes to 134 for Nkunku.
