Despite being seemingly on the home straight, Christopher Jullien’s move from Celtic to Schalke is off, according to Sport1.

Schalke had agreed a one-year loan with an option to buy for Jullien but discussions between the Frenchman, his advisor and S04 sporting director Rouven Schröder failed to come to an agreement over personal terms.

The 29-year-old was even in Germany on Wednesday to undergo preliminary medical checks.

Jullien has Bundesliga experience having played at Freiburg but played most of his football at Toulouse. The former French youth international moved to Celtic in 2019 for €8m but despite being a regular in his first season, has played just nine league games over the past two years because a serious knee injury.

A central-defender remains a priority for Schalke with the possibility that Malick Thiaw (20) is heading to Milan. The German youth international missed just three 2. Bundesliga games last season and was an important member of the squad as S04 returned to the top flight at the first time of asking.
