According to multiple reports, Red Bull Salzburg sporting director Christoph Freund will replace Hasan Salihamidžić as Bayern Munich’s sporting director.

Freund will begin his new role in September after the current transfer window has finished. The signing of Freund was something that the Bayern bosses Jan-Christian Dreesen, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Uli Hoeneß kept quiet.

Bayern had originally hoped that they could replace Salihamidžić by December, but Bayern have worked in secret to get the deal done sooner than expected.

Freund will replace Salihamidžić who was fired after Bayern’s last game of the season against 1.FC Köln after a poor season where the club underperformed on all fronts and only won the league on the final day due to Borussia Dortmund’s collapse.

At Bayern, Freund will face a completely different challenge compared to at Salzburg, in Austria his focus has been on buying and developing young talent, while in Germany his focus will be on building a team that can once challenge for the Champions League.
