Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag’s shift to a high transition style has led to the club having one of its worst seasons in Premier League history.

The decision to shift away from the possession-based system that was employed last season has meant his go-to midfield partnership of last term, Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, have hardly got a chance to play together this campaign.

When they have played, their lack of pace has been exposed and while the poor form of Sofyan Amrabat has meant the Brazilian has continued to receive chances, Kobbie Mainoo’s emergence has forced the manager to overlook the Dane time and time again.

The 32-year-old had started 32 games last term and only 11 games this campaign with the former Tottenham Hotspur star playing a grand total of 135 minutes so far in 2024.

Eriksen’s future

His last start came in January in a game against his former outfit while his last cameo came in the memorable FA Cup humdinger against the Merseysiders.

The Denmark international has made his displeasure known to the former Ajax coach and even impressed during the recent international break. But chances have remained elusive.

Despite the injury crisis, the Dutch manager opted to bring on the Moroccan instead of the former Inter Milan star during the Premier League game against Liverpool last Sunday.

Rumours continue to swirl over his future at Old Trafford with plenty advocating for the Denmark international to leave in the summer.

Turkish clubs and Saudi Arabian clubs remain interested while a return to Ajax is also on the cards. However, Tipsbladet have claimed that Eriksen is likely to turn down the chance to move to Turkey and the Middle-East.

Most likely destinations

A return to Amsterdam remains “far from certain” with the outlet claiming staying in Manchester or moving back to Brentford are seen as “probable” options.

“It is possible that the Danish international says “fine, I’ll take what I can get” to Erik ten Hag and the management at United in relation to playing time and instead of switching away from Manchester this summer, he chooses to take a years where he is not in the ideal lineup.

“In Brentford, Eriksen will be a regular and have good Danish playmates, with whom he can also be seen outside the pitch. At the same time, he and his family have previously lived in London, which is why he should be able to settle in quickly.”

Eriksen remains the best passer at the club and against a stubborn low block, he has the quality to make the difference. But with Ten Hag adamant about his chaos ball tactics, Eriksen’s opportunities are likely to remain limited.
