Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen believes his side should have responded to West Ham United in their 1-0 Premier League defeat today.

However, the Danish playmaker said they will find a response in the coming games and backed teammate David De Gea to recover from his howler.

The United keeper allowed a tame effort from Said Benrahma to creep in. It was his fourth error leading to a goal in the Premier League this season.

United failed to find a way back into the game as West Ham held on to secure the three points today.

Eriksen said (via Man United’s official website): “He [De Gea] is one of the reasons why we are where we are. He has proven that again and again. Anyone can have a bad game or a little mistake.

“We had the team, and we had the qualities. We should have bounced back, and we will.

“I think we started the game well and felt we were in a good position to really get a grip on the game. I think it has been a theme in a lot of the games we have lost or games we have played this season.

“We’ve had a lot of chances to finish the games early, which, unluckily, we have not done. You can see that today.

“Teams in the Premier League are tough and are good enough to punish us if we don’t take them.”

The loss today leaves United sweating over their top-four spot, with Liverpool in hot pursuit. The Reds have won six consecutive games.

Liverpool (62 points) are only one point behind the Red Devils. However, the Merseyside club has played a game more.

Man United have now lost back-to-back league games. They lost 1-0 to Brighton & Hove Albion in midweek and by the same scoreline today.

Man United manager Erik ten Hag will try to arrest the club’s poor form away from home. United have only won two out of their last 11 away games (LDLLLWLWDLL).

Eriksen is adamant their dip in form is not due to a lack of energy and thinks they will finish the season strongly.
