Newcastleโs poor run of form in the Premier League came to an end on Friday beating Wolves 1-0 curtesy of a Chris Wood penalty.
Scorers: Wood 73โฒ
Newcastle got off to a bright start and thought theyโd taken the lead in the 24th-minute. After some intricate play in the penalty area, Bruno Guimarรฃes squared the ball across the Wolves six-yard area to Chris Wood.
Wood was on the floor appealing for a penalty but was still able to improvise a finish. The hostsโ joy was short-lived though as VAR ruled the goal out for a marginal offside in the build-up.
A game of few chances came to life in the second period as the visitors got more of a foothold on the game. Wolves struggled to create chances though and the spaces left at the back were exposed by Newcastle on the counter.
Striding forward Joelinton slipped in Wood who got to the ball before the onrushing Josรฉ Sรก whose clumsy challenge brought down the 30-year-old forward.
Wood won the penalty and converted it with a powerful strike straight down the middle of the goal.
Fabio Silva had two great opportunities to draw Wolves level. The first was a free header within the box that he simply didnโt connect well enough with before forcing a good save from Martin Dรบbravka with a shot from outside the area.
That win took Newcastle 10 points clear of the drop as Wolves lose pace on the European spots.
