Sheffield United are actively in the market for a new right-sided centre-back, having previously been linked with Tottenham’s Ashley Phillips, fresh reports suggest Chris Wilder is a fan of Luke Ayling.

According to The Sun’s Alan Nixon, Ayling is being closely monitored by the South Yorkshire club.

The 32-year-old versatile defender is currently on loan at Middlesbrough from Leeds United. His contract with the Whites will expire in the summer and they have zero interest in extending it.

Ayling has made over 250 appearances in the Championship and almost a century in the Premier League. He would add experience to the Sheffield United back line as well as depth. Additionally, he would allow the Blades to have some flexibility in terms of system because he’s capable of playing as a right-sided centre-back or as a right-back and wingback.

As things stand, Sheffield United’s back line for next season is uncertain due to numerous contracts expiring in the summer. And there is also the possibility of assets such as Anel Ahmedhodzic being sold to generate more funds for a summer rebuild.

With that in mind, it comes as no shock that Chris Wilder’s side is actively searching for defensive players as they gear up for a promotion charge next term in the always difficult Championship.
