Now, the 54-year-old has revealed that the recruitment team is working on bringing in alternative targets after their failed attempt to lure him to the Riverside.

The Boro boss was relaxed about the situation despite his desire to add to the squad with only a couple of weeks left in the transfer window to do so.

“He’s committed his future to Hull,” said Wilder, via Teesside Live.

“We were open with our interest in the player. The decision has been made by the player.

“A positive offer from us as well which was rejected. We’d usually try and keep that stuff private but I think it was on their side from the off that it was out there.

“We made the offer for a good player in a position we’re looking to fill. But he’s signed a new deal, so we have to accept that.

“But listen, I think when you go in for players, there’s always two or three you’re looking at. You’re not just going straight out for one with nothing alongside it at all.

“The specific positions we want to strengthen, we have three or four targets for everyone and it’s possible to make bids for two or three players at one time, and see which one drops.

“That’s the way of the world and how football clubs work. We’re still confident that position gets filled with a really good player.”

It has been a busy summer at the Riverside, with big sales made, including eight-figure fees received for both Marcus Tavernier and Djed Spence.

True False

Several incomings have also been made, with Marcus Forss, Matthew Hoppe, and Darragh Lenihan some of the bigger names among them.

But it has been a disappointing start to the season for Wilder’s side, who is still hoping to add a number of players to his squad before the September 1 deadline.

The Verdict

Greaves would have been a hugely exciting addition to Middlesbrough’s side given the youngster’s obvious potential.

His contract extension with Hull will be a huge boost to the club, especially considering some of the talent that has been sold in recent years.

Boro will have to shift their attention to other targets and it comes as no surprise to hear Wilder confirm that they have already lined up alternatives.

It will be a crucial couple of weeks for Boro’s season, with three to four additions needed for the team to really compete at the top of the table.
