It was previously reported in September that the new owners were considering a contract offer for the 57-year-old following their arrival.

The Sheffield United manager has revealed ahead of this weekend’s clash with Cardiff City that the deal to purchase the club is close to being finalised.

Wilder signed an 18-month contract when he returned to Bramall Lane as manager last year, and is now entering into the final stages of that deal, which runs until the end of the current campaign.

Wilder has confirmed that he would like to extend his stay at Sheffield United beyond this season.

He has claimed that he will be the first to admit he should walk away should he feel unwanted, but that he believes his work is currently being appreciated by everyone involved with the club.

“I’m here to serve the football club,” said Wilder, via The Star.

“I came back to do that and to help.

“I’m six months into a build and that’s pretty early in that. Everything will take care of itself.

“I’d like to think that the job we’re all doing here is being appreciated by everybody; most importantly the supporters.

“As soon as I don’t think anyone wants me here, then that decision will be made by me.

“But I’d like to think that they’re enjoying what they’re seeing and I’d love to extend, of course I would. Why would I not?”

Sheffield United’s promotion ambition

Sheffield United currently lead the way at the top of the Championship table after 21 games.

The Blades are ahead of second place Leeds United by three points going into this weekend’s latest round of fixtures.

Next up for Wilder’s side is a trip to face Cardiff City on Saturday in a 3pm kick-off.

New contract for Wilder would be justified

Wilder has done well since returning to Sheffield United, having struggled with his last few roles in management.

He has reinvented himself tactically, and has managed a difficult situation behind the scenes at Bramall Lane.

While he has a talented squad at his disposal, a lack of depth is an issue that had potential to hurt their promotion chances, as well as the two points they were deducted.
