Former Premier League Golden Boot winner Chris Sutton has urged Norwich to reject interest from Liverpool in midfielder Emi Buendia this summer, who has been directly involved in 32 goals this season.

Liverpool are reportedly looking at Buendia as a potential target for the summer if they opt to strengthen their wide options ahead of next season, but Sutton believes that Norwich should pull out all the stops to avoid Buendia departing Carrow Road.

Sutton has hinted that the only way he can see Buendia leaving Norwich is if his head gets turned by interest or a huge offer comes in for him.

Speaking to the Eastern Daily Press, Sutton offered his thoughts on what Norwich should do with Buendia. “Norwich have to try and pull out all the stops to keep him (Buendia).

“You need your creative players and the ones that are going to nick a goal and he is that player.

“Let’s not kid ourselves – there will be clubs out there who will have been watching him this season. He works hard out of possession as well – there’s not a lot wrong with him!

“There will be clubs in for him and maybe he will have his head turned again. Maybe Norwich will have an offer that they just cannot refuse.”

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Buendia enjoyed a stunning campaign in the Championship as he led Norwich to the title and promotion back to the Premier League. He ended the season with 32 direct goal contributions in the second tier, scoring 15 and assisting 17 for the Canaries in 39 appearances. Buendia was named the Championship Player of the Season, ahead of Brentford’s Ivan Toney and his Norwich teammate Teemu Pukki, to highlight just how impressive he has been this year.

This shows that, ignoring the financial side for a second, Buendia could be a very shrewd addition to Liverpool’s squad. He can score and create goals, as also shown by his eight goal contributions as Norwich finished bottom of the Premier League last time out, and that means that he could add some extra attacking flair to Jurgen Klopp’s midfield options.

However, the finances are important in any transfer deal. Sutton suggests that a big offer would need to come in for Norwich to tilt their head and Jurgen Klopp has ruled out any huge money deals for Liverpool this summer. Klopp has claimed that he does not expect many high-profile transfers this summer, which could mean that a move for the 32 goal involvement attacker is not viable for Liverpool. Buendia could, however, be a player Liverpool continue to track ahead of future transfer windows.
