Fleetwood Town take on Sheffield Wednesday in an FA Cup fourth round replay at Highbury Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Cod Army will meet the Owls for the fourth time this season after they played out a 1-1 draw at Hillsborough last Saturday, meaning a replay was needed to determine who progresses.
Scott Brown’s side have been on a poor run of form of late, losing six of their last seven league games. The latest of those defeats was Saturday’s 3-2 home loss to struggling Burton Albion, with the Brewers scoring a 96th-minute winner.
Fleetwood now sit 17th in the League One table, just two points clear of the relegation zone. However, their cup performances have been much better and they beat Championship outfit Queens Park Rangers in the third round to reach this stage of the competition for the first time in their history.
Wednesday secured a 1-0 home win over fellow promotion contenders Plymouth Argyle on Saturday thanks to Callum Paterson’s seventh-minute strike.
Darren Moore’s men moved above the Pilgrims to the top of the table with their sixth consecutive league victory, while it extends their unbeaten run to 22 games in all competitions.
Former Blackburn Rovers and Celtic striker Chris Sutton believes the Owls will edge this encounter with a 1-0 win.
“Promotion is clearly the priority for Sheffield Wednesday. They have been on a great run to go top of League One, but they still have to watch out for teams like Derby who are giving it a real go to catch them,” Sutton told the BBC.
“Fleetwood got a really good draw at Hillsborough first time out, and you might think home advantage gives them the edge now, but I actually think Wednesday will nick this one.”
The winner will face either Burnley or Ipswich Town in the fifth round.
The verdict
It is hard to disagree with Sutton’s prediction here.
Given the contrasting fortunes of the pair, Wednesday would have to come into the game as favourites.
But much may depend on the strength of the Owls’ line-up and Moore may decide to make changes, particularly with another huge league clash against Ipswich at Portman Road coming up this weekend.
Wednesday do have a strong squad with enough quality to win the game even should they rotate, so a narrow victory seems a likely outcome.
