Roma defender Chris Smalling has rejected the contract extension offer from his club, with Inter ready to move for him on a free transfer.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Il Messaggero, via FCInterNews, who report that the 33-year-old has turned down the offer of a new two-year deal from the Giallorossi worth €2.5 million net per season for the time being.

Smalling will have the option to extend his contract with Roma by one season automatically at the end of the current campaign once he reaches 50% of available minutes played during the campaign, which looks only a matter of time.

The capital club have offered the Englishman a two-year deal instead, worth €5 million net over two seasons.

However, the former Manchester United has decided not to accept the Giallorossi’s proposal.

Furthermore, Il Messaggero, Inter remain very aware of Smalling’s situation, and would be ready to offer him a two-year deal to sign on a free transfer in the summer.
