Chicote Calderón scored one of the best goals of the Liga MX season in the 81st minute to stun Club América 1-0 in the first leg of the Liguilla quarter-finals on Wednesday night.
In a very entertaining match, Calderón proved to be decisive late with a stunning strike from outside the box into the top corner past the outstretched arm of Memo Ochoa to give Chivas a very unexpected lead heading into Saturday’s second leg.
Despite fans being in the Estadio Akron for the first time all season, albeit at a limited capacity, the match was much less chippy than a usual Súper Clásico yet provided the goods as both teams took control for large portions of the match.
Chivas goalkeeper Raúl Gudiño kept the home side in the match with a pair of huge saves in the first half, making seven saves in total to earn the clean sheet.
In the other match of the evening, 12th-seeded Puebla continued their miraculous run by stunning top-seeded León 2-1.
