In an official statement on Friday night, the Mexican Football Federation has decided against Chivas’ request to suspend Cruz Azul’s Ignacio Rivero.
On 15 November, Chivas player Alexis Vega was injured by Rivero during a match between the U-23 Mexican National Team and Cruz Azul which the club deemed malicious.
In the official statement, the Disciplinary Commission explained the tackle did “not observe a particularly violent attitude; but rather a competitive intensity.”
Rivero was deemed to be “serving the ball in a loyal manner with no intention of hurting his opponent.”
If Chivas make it past Necaxa on 21 November, there is a chance they could meet Cruz Azul in the quarter-finals.
