Chivas’ underwhelming performances the last few years have not been for lack of resources.
The side from Guadalajara have spent over $82m (€72m) since José Luis Higuera joined Chivas as CEO in 2015.
Newspaper AS has taken note of all of the club’s signings, most notably Alan Pulido’s big $18m (€16m) capture in 2016.
He is followed by another attacker, Rodolfo Pizarro, who arrived from Pachuca for $14m (€11m) in January 2017 before the club sold him to Monterrey for $16m (€12.5m) just a year and a half later – making him the costliest inter-league transfer in Mexican history.
Of course, their economic efforts have not been noticed on the field. Since Higuera’s arrival, Chivas have won only five titles: The 2015 Apertura and 2017 Clausura Copa MX titles, the 2017 Liga MX Clausura title, the 2015 Supercopa MX, and the 2018 CONCACAF Champions League.
To add insult to injury, Chivas were embarrassed at the 2018 Club World Cup, coming in sixth place out of seven teams after losing 3-2 against Kashima Antlers of Japan before losing the fifth-place game in penalties to nine-man ES Tunis.
Chivas finished 11th in the 2018 Liga MX Apertura, missing the post-season by six points.
