The Copa Interamericana could return this year, which would pit the CONCACAF Champions League winner (Chivas) against the Copa Libertadores winner (River Plate).
Since beginning in 1969, 18 editions of the tournament were held. However, the one-off final has not taken place since 1998.
The Omnilife Group, owned by Jorge Vergara, who also owns Chivas, will float the possibility of bringing back the Copa Interamericana.
The Omnilife Group is a multi-level marketing company based in Mexico that distributes dietary supplements.
The executive director of Chivas, José Luis Helguera, has outlined his intentions.
“We have spoken with some representatives and promoters who have told us to play with River, but still nothing is finalised.
“It is feasible that it could happen. It would be something very positive and very good to play against the Copa Libertadores champion.”
CONCACAF will initiate negotiations with CONMEBOL. Once the order is placed, the South American governing body of football has to give the go-ahead to re-organise the trophy.
