Chivas manager Víctor Manuel Vucetich hailed Cristian ‘Chicote’ Calderón after his goalscoring heroics helped the Flock defeat América in the Liguilla.
Calderón, a left-back by trade, has found himself pushed into a more advanced position in the play-offs due to absence of injured attackers José Juan Macías and Alexis Vega.
The 23-year-old made the most of the opportunity by scoring all three goals for Chivas in the two-legged Clásico Nacional affair.
Calderón notched the only goal in Wednesday’s first clash in Guadalajara, before producing two stunning efforts from distance to upset América 2-1 on their home turf on Saturday.
Speaking after the game at the Estadio Azteca, Vucetich was full of praise for how Calderón adapted to his new role.
“The circumstances arose to be able to use him due to the absence of elements that are as important as Macías and Vega, so we had to make modifications,” ‘King Midas’ said.
“Valuing his work, his conditions and personality, we knew that we had an element that he likes to participate above.
“I think it was the right time to use it because he has a goal, so I think Calderón has earned that participation, this is the moment of reward that he has for the work he has been doing.”
Chivas will face the León in the semi-finals, with Los Rojiblancos acting as hosts in the first leg on Wednesday.
