Federico Chiesa joined Liverpool in a flash deal late in the window, ending a lengthy transfer saga concerning his future at Juventus. However, he has barely been able to play since joining. He has notched just 3 appearances for a total of 78 minutes, providing an assist, Goal relays.
The winger has been unavailable for the past four matches, although apparently not because of a proper injury but rather to build fitness. He had sat out the first four games of the season because of his impending transfer and to get up to speed physically after it.
Liverpool signed Chiesa for a relatively low fee from Juventus, €12M plus €3M add-ons, since he had just a year on his contract with the Bianconeri and wasn’t in the plans of new coach Thiago Motta. He hasn’t been called up by Luciano Spalletti in the first two international breaks.
Reds manager Arne Slot commented on his newcomer in a recent presser.
“It’s difficult for him to make the step toward the intensity levels the rest of the team is at the moment. That has not much to do with Serie A or the Premier League, but more with him missing a complete pre-season. It would be challenging for any player.”
If he were 100 percent all the time, he’d probably still be with the Bianconeri, which wouldn’t have doubts about handing him a large contract. The drama had a decent ending for all parties involved since he found a cushy landing spot, and hopefully, the Reds will find a way to keep him healthy and fit so he can resume being an asset for the Azzurri as well.
