Juventus controlled the pitch against Monza, but had to dig deep in a tense contest across 90 minutes to keep their tournament alive.

The opener came minutes after the restart thanks to an electric Moise Kean. The 22-year-old made a darting run into the box and connected with Weston McKennie’s cross as the ball blasted home 1-0.

However, Monza slowly grew into the match and similarly pulled level when Mattia Valoti’s header found the back of the net despite the desperate reach of goalkeeper Mattia Perin.

Youngsters took centre stage for Juventus, too, with Nicolò Fagioli and Fabio Miretti impressing in the opening half, but their influence wasn’t quite enough to give the hosts the lead.

Coming out into the second half, Massimiliano Allegri’s side continued to dominate the ball but struggled to truly test their opponents and the game became a choppy affair.

Kean thought he doubled the lead only to see his goal ruled offside and it seemed as though Monza might push this match into extra time and threaten another shock elimination.

That was until Juventus’ number seven Federico Chiesa rose to the occasion off the bench.

The Italian created space on the left wing, fought off a defender and curled his shot into the far side of the net for 2-1.

It’s his first goal for the cub in over a year (378 days) after rupturing his Achilles and is his 10th in the competition.

Allegri will no doubt love to have Chiesa back amongst the goals as Juventus move on to the next round of the competition against Lazio and look to improve from third in Serie A.
