The Kansas City Chiefs are going to try yet another left tackle option for the 2025 option, as they inked Jaylon Moore to a two-year deal worth $30 million (he'll earn $21 million guaranteed). Fans will have differing opinions on this signing, as, on the one hand, Moore played well for the 49ers during the 2024 season. On the other hand, he started just five games and has mostly been a backup throughout his career.
The Chiefs are once again taking a gamble on a bit of an unknown for the left tackle spot. They've previously tried to make it work with Wanya Morris, Kingsley Suamataia, and D.J. Humphries, but now it'll be Moore protecting Patrick Mahomes' blindside in 2025.
Moore, a fifth-round pick in the 2021 draft by the 49ers, has gotten some playing time at left tackle since entering the league, but only whenever Trent Williams has been unavailable. He's done well when replacing Williams, yet stepping in when a starter goes down is a different story from being the full-time starter. We don't know yet if Moore will be up to the task.
On the one hand, the Chiefs needed to address the left tackle position, and they signed a guy who has played well when thrust into the role. That being said, Moore has only started 12 games in four seasons, and it's hard to get too excited about him being the long-term answer.
Considering how big of a need left tackle was for the Chiefs, it was good to see them add one in free agency. It does feel as though they could have made the trade the Commanders did for Laremy Tunsil and added a top-tier option to protect Mahomes' blindside, but the reality is that they signed Moore, and this is who they're rolling with for 2025.
Moore is a big risk because of his limited snaps throughout four seasons, but the Chiefs clearly saw enough evidence that he can be a worthy option for them on the o-line. With that in mind, I'll give the signing a C+.
