Javier Hernandez has a point since Manchester United have not won the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson announced his retirement in 2013.

The former Manchester United striker says the club need to adapt and finally get over Sir Alex Ferguson’s exit if they are to return to the top of English football.

Ferguson retired having won 13 league titles and two Champions Leagues among his impressive trophy hauls. The Scot famously said United would eventually knock Liverpool off their perch and we did exactly that.

Hernandez was a member of Fergie’s last Premier League-winning squad in 2012/13 as United took back the title after losing it on goal difference the previous season.

The Mexican currently plays for LA Galaxy in the United States and he hates how things have panned out for his former club.

When asked if he was surprised by United’s fall from grace, Hernandez said (via Sky Sports): “That’s a very tricky question, man. Because I’ll answer yes and no.

“It doesn’t surprise me because in life it’s not easy having a manager for 26 years in the way that Sir Alex did it.

“One of his greatest aptitudes, in my humble opinion, was that probably seven out of 10 players who signed for United worked out. That’s not easy, man – not for Real Madrid or Barcelona or even for Chelsea, City, Liverpool or Bayern Munich.

“It’s not easy to do that for 26 years, but Sir Alex was very good on the personal side to see how he could take the best out of you and how you can help the club.

“To substitute that man like that is not easy. It is like winning the lottery.

“Do you think anyone you hire afterwards is going to be able to do 80 per cent of what Ferguson did?

“My point of view is that after Ferguson brings so much pressure that it just isn’t going to work out.

“United need to now get over the fact that Sir Alex Ferguson has gone.

“Would we like to have someone similar? Yes, yes, yes. But Sir Alex has gone and it is never going to be the same.

“So United have to adapt and allow the next manager to do it in his own way.”

We all hope that United can return to those heights under new manager Erik ten Hag.

The Dutchman’s side started the season poorly with a 2-1 defeat against Brighton.

They will need to get back on track with an away trip to Brentford up next.

In order for United to properly move on from Ferguson, we need a manager to make the job his own. I think Ten Hag can do that if he has the right backing from the board.
