Chesterfield are expected to complete the signing of Paddy Madden on a free transfer following their return to the Football League.

Chesterfield preparing for Football League return

The Spireites spent decades up and down the third and fourth tier of English football before they were relegated to the National League in 2018, and it’s fair to say that they found it tough going at that level.

However, under the guidance of Paul Cook, they have just enjoyed a brilliant season, which saw the side claim the title having picked up 98 points.

Now, they are back in League Two, but it’s not about consolidation for Chesterfield, as they will be hoping to replicate Wrexham, who have shown that back-to-back promotions are a real possibility.

Chesterfield set to sign Paddy Madden

Of course, to do that the squad will need strengthening, and it seems as though Chesterfield are set to make a statement signing, as it was revealed by journalist Sam Byrne that forward Madden is likely to join Cook’s team.

Believe Paddy Madden now looks set for a move to newly-promoted League Two side Chesterfield, following his exit from Edgeley Park this week.”

This comes after Stockport had confirmed that Madden would be leaving County this summer after the 34-year-old didn’t agree new terms with the club following their promotion, with his current deal expiring in a matter of weeks, meaning he will become a free agent.

Paddy Madden should thrive at Chesterfield

It’s unclear as to why exactly Madden couldn’t agree a new deal to remain at Edgeley Park, with the length of contract perhaps a key factor due to his age.

But, from a football perspective, the Irishman has been outstanding since he arrived at County, and he continued to show his class this season, scoring 17 goals to lead the team to the League Two title.

So, Chesterfield will be getting a player who has proven himself at this level, and he has shown he is still capable of scoring goals, whilst his leadership in the dressing room will also be very welcome for Cook.

Of course, given his age, this is a signing very much made with the short-term in mind, but, as outlined above, Chesterfield are expecting to be in the mix for promotion again next season, so signings like this are required, as they know Madden will hit the ground running.

This move gives an indication of the ambition Chesterfield have, and it will be interesting to see who else they manage to bring through the door over the next few months.

Stockport will look to kick-on

It was a sad day for all connected to Stockport when it was confirmed that Madden would be leaving, as he has made himself a club legend with his contribution over the past three-and-a-half years.

He was integral as the side returned to the Football League, which was a massive achievement, and he has continued to play a key role in helping them back to League One.

Ultimately, the club will continue to progress, and they are another side with real ambition, even though the third tier is obviously a much bigger challenge, and they will also be keen on bringing some real quality to help Dave Challinor.
