“Cherry on top”- Ligue 1 club president explains how Tottenham won the race to sign 19-year-old starlet this summer

Metz president Bernard Serin explains how Tottenham Hotspur managed to sign midfielder Pape Matar Sarr

In conversation with Graoully Mag on Moselle TV, via teamTALK (h/t Football.london), Metz president Bernard Serin shared why Tottenham Hotspur managed to land Pape Matar Sarr despite competition for the young exciting midfielder.

It is believed that a long list of clubs like Aston Villa, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Manchester City were all interested in signing the 19-year-old Metz midfielder. Despite this competition, Spurs managed to secure the signing of the talented youngster.

The young midfielder will be playing another season on loan at Metz which could help him develop more of his game and technical abilities before making starting his footballing career with Spurs. A change of environment and the conditions of the English game can be quite overwhelming for some of the younger players and this move could help him settle well into the new role.

The 19-year-old midfielder has played 34 games across all competitions in which he has scored 4 goals and provided 1 assist for Metz.

The president of the Ligue 1 club went on to describe his thoughts about the whole situation and why he believes that this was a great deal for both the teams:

“The cherry on top is that we can keep him for an extra year with us…….Obviously, we always wish to get more. But he’s still a kid who has played very few games in Ligue 1, who turned 18 on September 14, 2020, and we’re talking about a transfer when he’s not even 19. So, in the end, when I look at the transfer fee plus the bonuses that we can get when he plays for Spurs, I think we can be satisfied.”

Matar Sarr can be a great long-term investment into the club if he is nurtured and moulded in the right manner. The availability of the Senegalese player could also help Nuno rotate his options in the midfield and add some youthful vigour across different competitions for Spurs.
