Chelsea’s xG slump shows desperate attacking issues

Chelsea drew 1-1 all against Brighton last night, a disappointing result without doubt.

But even a draw was a stroke of good fortune, in reality. Chelsea’s goal came from a very speculative strike from Hakim Ziyech, and the team barely created a chance after that.

According to FBRef, the Blues managed an xG of just 0.7 through the whole game. That’s barely better than the 0.5 we managed in an anaemic showing against Man City at the weekend.

The system is just not functioning at the moment, with players and tactics inextricably linked in a nexus of failure. We had long hoped that returning to full strength in the middle of the pitch would help, but even the return of Mateo Kovacic and N’Golo Kante to full fitness hasn’t done much to help.

There are less than two weeks in January left to go, and alarm bells must seriously be ringing at board level.
