Chelsea’s right wing back hole still to fill – bringing back bad memories

Chelsea have signed an attacking player, they’re close to signing a central defender, and have another lined up to follow.

In midfield, they’ve got the returning Conor Gallagher to fill in gaps in the squad.

There is only one position where they have serious need, yet we haven’t heard any convincing rumours of a signing – at right wing back.

It’s a tricky position to fill, as Reece James is so obviously going to be first choice. The Blues will need to find either someone young enough to be happy to be an understudy, or old enough to be happy to be a rotation option.

Given they’re not signing a starter, they won’t want to commit big money on a transfer fee or wages either.

This smells very much like an issue that the club will attempt to fix late on deadline day with a mediocre player from abroad – Davide Zappacosta anybody?
