Raheem Sterling has teamed up with his new Chelsea squad on their tour of America.
Sterling has joined Thomas Tuchel’s side from Manchester City for around £50 million on a five-year deal.
He represents the first signing by the club’s new American owners and Tuchel believes the signing could signal a new era for the club.
“Hopefully he shapes our team by just being who he is,” Tuchel told BBC Sport.
“He will be a huge asset for us. For me, he is a huge player, with a huge influence in the last years in English football and he’s in a perfect age to now take responsibility around young players that we have and be an example.
“Getting what he delivered for years given his age, his hunger for responsibility, and his style of play and his amount of intensity is outstanding.
“It is the benchmark in the Premier League and is exactly what we need.”
Sterling will want to hit the ground running and impress in Chelsea’s pre-season friendlies in the States.
His first opportunity to impress will be against Club America on Sunday in Las Vegas.
They then face Charlotte and Arsenal before finishing off their pre-season against Udinese in Italy.
It will give Sterling the opportunity to get to know his teammates ahead of the new season. And it seems Sterling might need the next few weeks to get to know his new colleagues.
That’s because a clip of him asking Malang Sarr what position he plays is going viral on Twitter.
In footage captured by the club, it shows Sterling meeting Sarr as they walk to the LA Dodgers Stadium.
After an introductory greeting, Sterling felt the need to clarify whether he was a left back or a centre-back.
“You actually a centre half or a left back?” Sterling asked with confusion in his voice.
“Centre back,” replied Sarr.
It was a little exchange that many Chelsea fans found the funny side of.
Check out the reaction:
Sterling – and Chelsea fans – may well be seeing a lot more of Sarr next season.
Defenders Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen have already left the club while there are doubts regarding the future of Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso.
The Blues have been linked with Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly with him set to replace Rudiger at the heart of defence. But Sarr looks set to make more than 21 appearances he made last season.
