Cruising to a four-goal lead early in the second half should be the recipe for a happy team.  Well, not at Chelsea.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side were cruising in Monday’s Premier League meeting with Everton thanks to goals from Nicolas Jackson and a Cole Palmer hat-trick.

So, when the hosts were awarded a penalty shortly after the hour mark, it stood to reason that Palmer would extend his tally as the club’s designated spot-kick taker.

Apparently not, with Noni Madueke insistent that he should step up from 12 yards to the point of arguing with the hat-trick hero and Jackson.

The playmaker was overruled as captain Conor Gallagher intervened and handed the ball to Palmer, who wrongfooted Jordan Pickford to extend the advantage.

It isn’t the first time that penalty duties have caused consternation among the Blues as Raheem Sterling and Palmer were locked in a dispute earlier in the season.

But it seems the Stamford Bridge soap opera rumbles on, even when they are riding the rare crest of a wave in games.
