Chelsea’s goalkeeper situation is gradually becoming more clear – but there are still a lot of questions out there.
Before the Club World Cup, clear attempts were made to sign AC Milan stopper Mike Maignan. But when Chelsea’s pre-tournament deadline passed, it really looked like they meant it. The Frenchman is now set to stay, and we don’t expect further bids from the Blues.
That has left Robert Sanchez still standing as number one, despite the pretty open attempts to upgrade on him with bids for Maignan. The Spaniard has kept his place as first choice in the USA, and unless something unexpected happens, will be our number one next season too.
That’s left Djordje Petrovic out in the cold after a superb season on loan with Strasbourg last year. He is now set for a Premier League move, with both Sunderland and now Bournemouth being heavily linked with him in a deal likely to be worth around £25m.
Sacha Tavolieri’s Tweet about a potential Mike Penders loan.
With Filip Jorgensen set to stick around as Sanchez’s backup, that leaves one goalie as the odd one out – teenager Mike Penders. The talented Belgian giant looks to have the highest ceiling of all the options, the question is just over how to develop him.
It’s been suggested by Sacha Tavolieri that Penders could go to Strasbourg this season, replacing Petrovic. That looks like a good idea to us, if he’s guaranteed starts. But it does affect our other loan plans, with the likes of Mathis Amougou and Kendry Paez slated to go to Le Meinau and Chelsea limited to just 3 players loaned to the same club.
