We’re through a good chunk of the season now, and we can look at the Premier League statistics and draw some reasonable conclusions.

Chelsea may have wobbled in defence recently, but their big problem has been creating and finishing chances. That’s an issue that predates Thomas Tuchel, but it’s also perhaps the only area the German coach hasn’t been able to radically improve us.

A glance at the Key Passes metric on WhoScored gives you a big clue about where the issues are.

Trent Alexander Arnold is top of the pile with 2.9 per game, and he’s followed by a Man U player, two Man City players, a Leeds player, two more Liverpool players, then a Brighton player.

It’s only then, in 9th place in the Premier League, that you reach the first Chelsea entry – and that’s Reece James, who has been out injured for some time.

Chelsea’s next entry is Callum Hudson-Odoi, way down in 18th.

You can’t score goals without creating chances, and this team has a long way to go on that front.
