Chelsea’s FIFA Club World Cup campaign is set to be postponed until 2022 following Japan’s withdrawal as hosts.

Japan have withdrawn as hosts for the tournament amid safety concerns over the coronavirus pandemic in the country, and FIFA are set to hold a meeting on October 20 to decide on where and when the Club World Cup will be rescheduled.

The multi-confederation tournament was due to take place from December 9 to 19, with Chelsea participating given their status as European champions, following Thomas Tuchel’s side’s Champions League triumph last season.

The Mirror are reporting that no decision has been made on where the rescheduled tournament will be held, though South Africa, Qatar and Brazil have shown an interest, though the latter has since withdrawn.

It is anticipated that the tournament will now not take place until 2022 however, and Chelsea will be keen to discover the new dates and how their participation with disrupt their domestic and European campaigns.
