With football postponed for the moment, we’ve been thinking about who gets in Chelsea’s all-time XI.
Today we’re choosing the right-back.
Here are the nominees …
Many modern fans will know Steve Clarke the manager, but not many will appreciate Steve Clarke the player.
Clarke made 421 appearances for the Blues during a successful eleven year period, and was reliable in every sense – ranging from passing, tackling and positional sense.
He was part of the team that won the FA Cup in 1997, the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1998 and was even named Player of the Season in 1994.
We’re pretty sure that looking up ‘consistency’ in the English dictionary will present the definition: César Azpilicueta.
Right back, left back, centre back, wing back – wherever you want him – you’re getting a reliable defensive performance, and he was one of the best players in England during the 2014/15 title win.
Everybody loves a bargain and 300+ appearances, plus five major honours for £8m is about as good as they come.
If anyone sums up the post-Abramovich era for Chelsea, it’s Branislav Ivanović.
Having initially struggled following his £10m move from Lokomotiv Moscow, Ivanović quickly became a mainstay under nine different managers for his defensive stability, physicality and ability to contribute in big moments.
The big defender left Stamford Bridge in 2017 with 377 appearances to his name, winning three Premier League titles, three FA Cups and the Champions League.
Here’s how the team is looking so far …
GK: Petr Cech RB: Branislav Ivanović
