With football postponed for the moment, we’ve been thinking about who gets in Chelsea’s all-time XI.

Today we’re choosing the left-back.

Here are the nominees …

3rd – Eddie McCreadie

You know when some people say they were born in the wrong era? This applies to Eddie McCreadie.

McCreadie was your typical modern wing-back, flying up and down the wing, getting crosses into the box and always overlapping his winger in order to create overloads.

He ended up making 331 appearances during an 11 year spell for the Blues, winning the FA Cup in 1970 and later going on to manage the club for two years.

2nd – Graeme Le Saux

Once the most expensive English footballers in history, Graeme Le Saux deserves a mention for his career at Chelsea.

Another all-action full back with a devastating left foot, the Blues found constant joy with him supplying the likes of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Tore Andre Flo.

He won just one major trophy – the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1998 – but his return to west London signified a change in fortunes for the club.

1st – Ashley Cole

It’s fair to say that looking back, the £5m + William Gallas they paid Arsenal for Ashley Cole turned out to be a bargain!

Not quite the attacking force many full backs are today, but few could match Cole for his defensive instincts, comfort on the ball and general level of consistency.

Swapping red for blue was not an easy decision, but winning every domestic and European competition available during a hugely successful eight year spell? Worth it.
