With football postponed for the moment, we’ve been thinking about who gets in Chelsea’s all-time XI.
Today we’re choosing the goalkeeper.
Here are the nominees …
He will never be credited with any world class input, but Ed de Goey was a reliable performer for Chelsea and the history books show that.
Not only did he win an FA Cup in 2000, but he also broke club records for the number of appearances (59) and clean sheets (27) in a single season – records subsequently beaten by Frank Lampard and Carlo Cudicini.
Three major honours and 127 appearances should never be sniffed at.
This may be a controversial one for Chelsea fans, but Thibaut Courtois deserves recognition for his time in West London.
It took five years to actually play for the club after signing in 2009, but quickly ousted Petr Čech and was instrumental in two Premier League wins under José Mourinho and Antonio Conte.
Few in world football could match his penalty box authority and when sharp, his shot stopping was seriously underrated. Talk about having a big presence in goal.
When considering the all-time great Premier League players, you would be mad not to have Petr Čech involved.
Signed for Chelsea when the Abramovich millions came in and never looked back, making a number of stunning saves, commanding his penalty box and keeping 142 clean sheets – all while suffering a serious skull fracture in between.
Čech made 347 appearances for the Blues during an 11-year stay, winning THIRTEEN major trophies including four Premier League titles, four FA Cup triumphs and a memorable Champions League in 2012.
Check back tomorrow when we will be choosing Chelsea’s greatest ever … right-back.
