Chelsea’s assistant coach Tanya Oxtoby has been appointed as the new manager of the Northern Ireland women’s national team.

The Irish Football Association announced the news via a post on their official website this afternoon.

Oxtoby has enjoyed a coaching career which has spanned over 11 years so far. She started out as Nottingham Forest manager in 2012 before occupying assistant manager roles with Perth Glory, Australia Under-20s and Birmingham City. Oxtoby then went on to be the manager of Bristol City for three years before being an assistant coach with the Scotland women’s national team and Chelsea.

The 41-year-old is now returning to the international game with Northern Ireland. She fills a position which has been vacant for more than six months.

After being unveiled as the nation’s new manager, Oxtoby said “I am delighted and honoured to join the Northern Ireland senior women’s team.

“I’m really excited to be part of the next stage of international women’s football in this football-loving country.

“I’m very much looking forward to contributing my experience and expertise to this exciting and talented team to help us achieve our potential.”

Oxtoby leaves her role as assistant coach at Barclays Women’s Super League club Chelsea with immediate effect.
