This was a sensational season if you are a fan of The Blues. Over the past year, we’ve seen some of the highest highs and lowest lows. In the end, Chelsea managed to walk away as the European champions with an optimistic outlook for next season. Let’s take a look at how they got there and the driving factors behind their success.

The Players

You can have millions of euros to spend and the best management in the world, but at the end of the day, the victory belongs to the players. Chelsea has elite level talent on this squad, and they oftentimes were not being used appropriately. To give credit where it’s due, let’s name the best Chelsea footballers of the season.

It’s hard to name one player the best overall, but a certain respect has to be paid to Mason Mount. Throughout the season, Mount was the one player that clearly looked like he was giving it his full effort, even in the rough times. With 6 goals and 5 assists, he was no slouch in the Premier League either.

When it came to delivering goals, Timo Werner was above everyone else on the squad. Despite rampant criticism, he still returned 12 goals and 15 assists across all competitions and was very productive throughout the season. Midfielder Jorginho also was very reliable this season, and has hinted that he will be sticking around after winning the Champions League. Of course, MVP winner and potential Ballon d’Or candidate N’Golo Kanté deserves a nod, as does goalkeeper Edouard Mendy for the immense effort he put in this year.

With their big match against Manchester City just around the corner, Chelsea was faced with a potentially massive problem as their star goalkeeper Edouard Mendy was forced out of a match against Aston Villa with a rib injury. With less than a week to go, there would not be a lot of time to heal up and be ready for this upcoming championship final match.

Problems like this and other nagging injuries throughout the season have sparked a major debate in the league with analysts wondering, is fixture congestion having a negative effect on the health and vitality of footballers? While the answer is clearly yes, there only seems to be more games and tournaments every year. Luckily, Mendy was able to play in this championship final match and considering how crucial he was in this performance, it is likely that Chelsea would not have won without him in the goal.

This Season Was Far From Perfect

There’s no getting around the fact that this past season was a struggle at many moments. While we can look back in hindsight and say that it was all worthwhile if it ended with a Champions League victory, the fact is that Chelsea was not having a good start this past season. Many changes needed to be made to bring this club back to their winning ways and that is exactly what happened.

Back in January, Chelsea was drowning in the competition. They were clearly struggling to stay in the top half of the premier league standings and had gone on a losing streak. Chelsea management had to make a call, and manager Frank Lampard was given his marching orders. At some moments Lampard looked like the future of the club, but something drastic had to happen to save this season.

German manager Thomas Tuchel was the replacement, and he immediately got to work to reinvigorate this squad. While Chelsea’s defence was one of the weakest in the Premier League at this point, Tuchel managed to turn it into one of the most difficult defensive lines to play against. He provided the offense with a new focus and eventually, the pieces started to come together. Chelsea lost just one game in their first 16 under Tuchel, and became a serious threat. While the Premier League championship was not in the cards, this club was finally getting the respect they deserve and ultimately finished 4th in the league.

Champions League Was Another Chance

While the Carabao Cup saw an abysmal performance from the Blues, the FA Cup went much better but still ended in disappointment. With the Champions League on the horizon, Chelsea had another chance. They ultimately managed to beat out very talented teams like Atletico Madrid, FC Porto, Real Madrid and eventually Manchester City. In a season that was filled with ups and downs, Chelsea truly deserved this victory.
