All the talk about the impending permanent move of Fikayo Tomori to AC Milan is to do with how little Chelsea are getting for their academy product after a superb loan spell in Serie A.
But let’s put things in perspective, as SempreMilan have done. The €28m that Tomori will join for seems paltry to us, because we’re desperate to keep him – but in reality he will become the fourth most expensive defensive player that the Rossoneri have signed.
Top of the list is Leo Bonucci, who signed for €42m in an ill fated move in the summer of 2017.
Then there was Mattia Caldara, who came the other way the next summer for €35m. Third up is the greatest of them all – Alessandro Nesta was a total bargain at €31m.
So in the end, Tomori will fetch an impressive fee for a Serie A defender. How high up that list would he be if we hadn’t included the €28m clause in his loan deal? Well, it doesn’t bear thinking about.
