Chelsea signing Barcelona striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this summer ‘wouldn’t surprise’ Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge.

The Blues are believed to be in the market for attacking reinforcements following the departures of Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner to Inter Milan and RB Leipzig, respectively.

Despite Aubameyang only signing for Barca in January, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano reported that Chelsea are ‘now considering’ a bid for him.

It’s claimed that ‘discussions’ have already taken place with the 33-year-old as Thomas Tuchel steps up his efforts to bring a new striker into Stamford Bridge before the window closes on September 1.

However, Romano has now revealed that Barcelona are only willing to allow one of Memphis Depay and Aubameyang to depart the Camp Nou.

Robert Lewandowski’s arrival from Bayern Munich has forced both players down Xavi’s pecking order, but the Poland international will still need a back-up in what is set to be a congested campaign.

What has Bridge said about Aubameyang?

In an interview with GiveMeSport, Bridge said: “I think they’ll look to add someone whether it’s Depay or Aubameyang.

“Barcelona are such a curious case, and they’re still looking to bring in Bernardo Silva even though we read one day that they’re trying to get players to take wage cuts, taking some of their own players to court, it’s unbelievable what’s going on at Barcelona Football Club.

“The treatment of some players leaves a lot to be desired from what you read, but that doesn’t seem to be stopping them from spending.

“However, I’m sure they’re at a stage where they will have to listen to offers for certain players. Lewandowski is going to be the first-choice without any shadow of a doubt, so if Tuchel does want Aubameyang, that would be a move that wouldn’t surprise me.”

Would Aubameyang be a good signing?

Tuchel knows all about Aubameyang’s qualities from their time together at Borussia Dortmund, with the forward registering 79 goals and 17 assists in 95 appearances under the German tactician.

The Gabon international then proved his quality in the Premier League following his switch to Arsenal, racking up 113 goal contributions in 163 outings for the Gunners, leading to Gary Neville labelling him “world-class”.

Aubameyang still has three years remaining on his £185,000-per-week contract, though, and it’s currently unclear how much Barca would demand to sanction his sale.

If Chelsea can snap Aubameyang up for a minimal transfer fee, then he could prove to be an astute acquisition, filling the void in Tuchel’s forward line until a long-term solution can be found.
