Eugenie Le Sommer was unable to take any of Lyon’s early opportunities, while Erin Cuthbert set up Guro Reiten to give Chelsea a first-half lead.

Lauren James then hit the post, Delphine Cascarino later did likewise for Lyon.

One concern for Chelsea ahead of the second leg at Stamford Bridge next Thursday was Millie Bright going off injured before the break.

All four quarter-final first legs ended with just one goal each, after Wolfsburg won at PSG with a 62nd-minute Dominique Janssen penalty.

The spot-kick was awarded following a hand ball by Élisa De Almeida, for which she received a second caution.
