Chelsea will open talks with Antonio Conte about Stamford Bridge return

Today’s Chelsea manager news has been pretty sensational, with Frank Lampard closing in on a return to the club – this time as a caretaker manager – but things are getting even spicier this evening.

The Independent are reporting that the club are considering approaching recently fired Spurs boss (and former Chelsea manager) Antonio Conte about taking over at Stamford Bridge.

Conte’s first spell at the club started with a brilliant title – then ended just 12 months later with a bitter legal dispute. That was with the old ownership, but a return still feels incredibly unlikely, given the easier options out there.

We can well believe the owners and sporting directors are willing to hear him out, but we really can’t see a return ever actually taking place. Conte has not just burned bridges at Chelsea, he’s repeatedly (and recently) shown he’s just too volatile to be the kind of project manager wanted at the Bridge.
