Enzo Fernandez is going to have surgery on the hernia which has been bothering him, sources in Argentina revealed last night.

Argentine journalist Hernan Castillo Tweeted last night that the long-awaited treatment would finally happen, with a view to getting the centre-mid fit again in time for the Copa America in June. Injuries to our other central midfield options mean we’ve put this off as long as possible, but clearly things have come to a head now. There’s no point risking longer term damage for the sake of these final few games.

“Breaking news: Enzo Fernández will have surgery tomorrow for an inguinal hernia because the discomfort he suffers is great. His idea is to be recovered to play the Copa América,” Castillo Tweeted.

The discomfort would certainly explain the below-par performances.

The right decision – maybe too late

Frankly, if Enzo is going to have surgery, we wish it had been done long ago. We’re not sure when this problem got so bad, but he’s been below his best for months.

Of course, at the time the decision to delay surgery was made, nobody knew that Fernandez would play so poorly, so it’s easy to say this all now. But in hindsight, it would have been the right move without doubt.

We battered Everton without him, we had a terrible result against Sheffield United, lost to Man City in the cup final and then got bulldozered by Arsenal on Tuesday night. We could have sent Enzo off to surgery after the famous win over Man U on the 4th of April, and by now he’d already be 3 week in to his recovery.

That would make us a lot less worried about the way he might potentially be rushed back for the Copa American, which kicks off in two months’ time.
