In terms of the wider media, the links to Cucurella only came to light once Manchester City’s attempts to sign him had failed.

But according to this story, Chelsea’ interest long predates these last two weeks.

In fact, Pol Ballus writes that both Petr Cech and Marina Granovskaia were in touch with the player to inform him that they were monitoring his progress – and that was before the takeover in May.

The assumption was always that the former Barcelona man would go to Man City to link up with Pep Guardiola, but once they had decided they were priced out, Chelsea were on hand to take advantage, having long established links.
