Chelsea aim to start contract talks with Antonio Rudiger before this summer’s international tournament (Euro 2020, taking place in 2021) according to a report in the Daily Mail tonight.
The paper claims that the Blues are keen to secure the defender on a long term renewal, with his current deal expiring in the summer of 2022. His potential involvement with Germany provides impetus to sort out a new agreement sooner rather than later.
The fact that he was only going to have one year left on his deal, and the fact that he was barely playing under previous manager Frank Lampard, had lead to the conclusion that the former Roma man would almost certainly leave this summer.
However the arrival of Thomas Tuchel has given Rudiger a new lease of life at Stamford Bridge, starting 8 of 12 games under the new coach; and that turnaround will be completed once he signs a new deal.
