Chelsea have made it clear that Enzo Fernandez is not for sale, the Guardian reports.
There is growing interest from Real Madrid, but the Blues are adamant that the Argentine midfielder is part of their long-term plans.
The Blues are confident they can fend off any approach this summer, even as Madrid prepare a midfield rebuild under incoming manager Xabi Alonso.
Alonso, who will succeed Carlo Ancelotti, is reportedly eager to strengthen Madrid’s central midfield.
Fernandez is one of several players on Madrid’s radar, which also includes Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister, Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Larsson, and Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi.
While Madrid have considered hijacking Arsenal’s move for Zubimendi, the Gunners are close to completing a deal to sign him.
Revamping the midfield has become a priority for the Spanish giants after a disastrous campaign.
After surrendering the La Liga title to Barcelona and being outclassed by Arsenal in the Champions League, Madrid are looking to add fresh energy and control in the middle of the park.
Madrid haven’t replaced Toni Kroos, and Luka Modric is approaching the end of his illustrious career, so there’s an obvious need for a new midfield maestro.
The Spanish giants have already wrapped up a deal to sign Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold and Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen, but midfield is still a priority.
Madrid are ready to go all out for Fernandez, who has enjoyed a prolific campaign in Chelsea colours.
The World Cup winner joined Chelsea for a then-club-record £106.7 million from Benfica in January 2023, and has developed into a central figure at Stamford Bridge.
Fernandez has added more attacking intent to his game under manager Enzo Maresca, returning seven goals and 13 assists in 44 games across all competitions.
He is also one of the assistant captains in Maresca’s young team. Fernandez is under contract until 2032 and is settled in London, so Chelsea have plenty of security over his long-term future.
There is no sign that the 24-year-old wants to leave, and Madrid may have to move mountains to change that.
