Chelsea have made their new sporting project all about signing up the best young players in football, and a glance at this year’s Golden Boy index reveals they’re doing a good job of it.

The Blues have 9 of the 100 top ranked players on the list, which factors in the talent of the player, the amount they’ve played so far, and the level of the league they’re playing in. All players under the age of 21 are included, with the Chelsea contingent coming in as follows.

Geovany Quenda (who will be on loan at Sporting until next summer) is 9th with a score of 82.1.

Jorrel Hato (who is an Ajax player but expected to join Chelsea in the next 24 hours) is 11th with a score of 76.9.

Mamadou Sarr (who has been loaned back to Strasbourg for the season) is 16th with a score of 73.7.

Tyrique George is 34th with a score of 69.3.

Estevao Willian is 40th with a score of 69.1.

Josh Acheampong is 42nd with a score of 68.9.

Mike Penders (who has also been loaned to Strasbourg) is 63rd with a score of 64.5.

Dario Essugo is 85th with a score of 60.5

Marc Guiu (who looks likely to go on loan to the Championship this year) is 88th with a score of 60.1.

Chelsea stars could make leaps up the table

The fact that playing time weighs so heavily in this list has a strong effect on the final scores. Sarr and Hato have played a lot and so get a much higher score than the likes of Acheampong and Penders, who could well have a higher ceiling but are only just starting their senior careers.

We also expect the likes of Estevao to jump rapidly up the list now he’s playing in a top league.

It will be very interesting to check back on this list in a year’s time.
